Project Description

The Background – Why did Polycon need help from a specialist Agency like Think Mad?

Ged Mason set up Polycon in 2014 having recognised there was a need from prospective clients in his sector to find a channel drainage supplier that could provide innovative and cost effective channel drainage products and solutions.   There are so many different drainage options for a buyer to choose from that it can often be difficult to know which channel drainage option is the best for the application required.

With over 20 years experience in the industry Ged knew that if he could deliver the right channel drainage solution at the right price and spend time helping the customer through the whole process, he would be offering something that most other suppliers did not offer.

In the early years of business the Polycon approach was proven to be correct and the business has gone from strength to strength.   When Ged first set up the business, like any new business, he had a limited budget and the initial budget website that was built to help Polycon have an online presence was looking tired; no longer reflecting the image of a fast growing, innovative and forward thinking manufacturer.   This is were Think Mad come into the picture…

What did the client need us to do?

For this next phase in the business, Ged needed to find a web design agency that didnt just simply build a website based on what he wanted.   He needed a company who could look at his business, and the sector itself, and give him full confidence that they understood the needs of his business.  He didn’t want just another new website that looked amazing on the eye.  He wanted a website that actually worked from the perspective of the buying customer.  A website that clients could use as a source of reference that answered the key questions of…

What channel drainage option do I need? What Do I need to spend? How can I keep costs to the right budget?

Of course, as well as this, he did want it to look great aswell!  And thats were our media and digital experience comes in.     Having spoken to a number of web design agencies who showed their full range of designs, none of them gave Ged the confidence that they would be able to deliver on all the brief.   So when we came along offering to not just design a new website, but actually come and work at his office with his team on the project, he was instantly impressed.

Our simple straight forward objectives were

  • We will come and work with your team each week at your office so that we can immerse ourselves in your business and fully understand what you do and why you do it that way
  • Agile Approach – We all agree what you need on a day to day, week to week basis and implement it on the new site.  (this prevents any costly shocks at the end of the project)
  • We teach your staff how to upload content, images, case studies during the build phase of the website (always the best way to save money after the website is finished because any futher chances and addtions can be done in house preventing further devopment fees or training costs)
  • We deliver an amazing looking website that actually meets the needs of your customer which helps them research your prodcusts and how they are applied in the real world.

What we actually did to help achieve the clients requirements

The choice was made – Think Mad would be delivering the new Polycon website!  So next we needed to look at the actions required to achieve our objectives.   There are a number of actions we carry out when working on a new project like this but here are a list of some of the most important…

  • Set up a live visual link – the client can check in on our progress at any time via an internet connection and secure login and see the progress being made
  • Set up Trello – For all our projects we use an amazing and very easy to use project management tool called Trello.  This tool enables us share our progress from start to finish.  For the Polycon website we were able to assign roles and tasks for all stakeholders from both agency and client side.  With all sides having visiblity of the project in real time  we saw big leaps forward on day to day / week to week basis intead of the more common freelancer / agency / bedroom warrior  (awful, in our opionion) approach of showing you a visual at the very end (often months down the line!…and often not what the client wants)
  • Guidance Visuals Created – (mini websites rather than just basic wire frames) for the client to help us understand visually what they do like… and probably the most important thing…what they don’t like!
  • Customer Product, Solution & Competition research – Working with the Polycon team, we spent a considerable amount of time immersing ourselves in the Polycon product and solution offering, comparing and contrasting it to that of the leading drainage channel suppliers in the UK.  This enabled us to undertand the online journey of there customer, from the inital online research, to what helped them buy from a supplier when they were on there website.  In doing so we were able to create a digital landing experience that showcased Polycon drainage products with explanations on how they are applied in the real world.

The Outcome – What the the finished solution look like?

The end result was a modern professional website that ticked all the boxes from a customer perspective.

What happened next? How we knew we had delighted our clients with our work.   Ged, the MD not only told us he was delighted with the website, he has not commisioned us to build an ecommerce website for the business called

We have also been brought in to look after the digital marketing stragegy for the whole business!
